While the 2018 Mac Mini I purchased from Other World Computing last September (2025) is a bit long in the tooth, it's been getting the job done. I like the ability to dual-boot into Windows, primarily to take advantage ham radio applications such as N1MM+, which is no longer possible with Apple Silicon machines. Nevertheless, the writing is on the wall, and it's only a matter of time before the Mac Mini will need to be retired. My plan was to bide my time, make the Mac Mini last, and wait for a good deal on a new machine. The opportunity arose sooner that I expected when a friend who works at a retail outlet told me a customer returned a brand-new MacBook Pro 16" and since it's no longer "new", they decided to mark it down 50%. Did I want it for half price? You bet I did, so I gave him my credit card and I'm now the happy owner of a new M4 MacBook Pro. It's wonderful, and since the Mac Mini still has some life in it, the laptop can be a true portable and not double as my primary desktop machine. I realize it's a "first world problem", but unplugging and reconnecting all those cables every time I want to take the laptop for a ride is a bit of a pain. Not only that, but the old 2012 MacBook Pro is still kicking too! The screen is showing some signs of failure, but it's functional and it's now setup as my dedicated slide scanning station. Now that DigMyPics is out of business, I decided to knuckle down and do the scanning myself. Bit of a learning curve, and I'll probably be posting something here once I start digging into that can of worms.
